Child trafficking racket exposed
admin — Tue, 01/26/2010 - 20:10
Just two days after your channel brought you the shocking story of a group of 17 children who were rescued after being abused, tortured and starved by an NGO in Chennai, other shocking cases of child trafficking have come to light. As many as 76 boys from Manipur and Assam have now been rescued from a home in Kanyakumari, while around seventy girls from this home who were taken to Bangalore have gone missing.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the whereabouts of the girls. ADGP of the CBCID has spoken to TIMES NOW about the child trafficking racket saying that it would investigate the incident.
A number of cases of child trafficking have been reported in recent years. On August 14, 2008 children from Manipur were rescued from 'Life Childrens Home'. In January 22, 2010 17 children were rescued from a house in Sholinganallur, run by Reach Home Children Foundation. And now, 76 boys from Manipur and Assam have been rescued from Bedesta Blessing, a home in Kanyakumari, where they were allegedly kept as in previous instances, in deplorable conditions.
The children allege they were brutally beaten, locked in a small room and stopped from going to school . They were also allegedly given food only twice a day for lunch and dinner. They also were found to be living in appalling confitions which led to severe skin infections.
Prabhakaran, a member of the Child Welfare Commitee which rescued the boys from Kanyakumari, said a special vigilance team was keeping a close watch on other orphanages in the district after the rescue.
"Our team is supposed to visit many of the orphanages in the district and we have already had a meeting of all the orphanages. If any incidents come to our notice where there is a violation of government rules and regulations or where there is no proper record keeping of the children and where they are coming from, their status as orphans or semi-orphans along with adoption related issues - in such cases we take strict action and also ensure that all the orphanages in our district - even though they are recognised - have proper infrastrcture facilties, " he said.
Joseph Johnson, another member of Child Welfare Committee said the 76 boys "Were kept in a home where social defence officials on inspection found that there were no proper records of the children maintained and no recognition from the department of Social Defence .
"So the matter was taken to the Child Welfare Committee where according to the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act, action was taken and the children have now been taken to Tirunelveli," he said.

Women are supposed to be very calm generally: but women feel just as men feel...they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer...It is thoughtless to condemn them, or laugh at them, if they seek to do more or learn more than custom has pronounced necessary for their sex.
